This book has become a favorite of mine since it came out the fall of 2026. It's beautiful, sad, hopeful, optimistic and, most importantly, makes me yearn for a good solo trip.
Ben Hatke is a cartoonist and in 2024 he set out to circumnavigate the globe by surface transportation only, just like the traveler Nellie Bly did it in the 19th century. The world has changed since then. Is 80 days a reasonable amount of time to cross the globe? With new borders and conflicts and the collapse of the British Empire, is such a trip possible? Sometimes the author questions whether it even has a point. But the adventure takes our author through beauty, exhaustion, wonder and magnificent observations both large and small. It is a beautiful exploration of exploration that will surely move you.
